Diesel Pollution at King's Cross station

The request was partially successful.

Dear Network Rail Limited,
In January of this year I received a response from Chris Grayling as follows:

"Regarding trains at King's Cross station, air quality within stations and in the vicinity of railway lines remains a topic of ongoing research. Studies are currently being conducted, with some recently published, reviewing air quality in the vicinity of Paddington, Marylebone, Edinburgh Waverly and Birmingham New Street stations."

"Some idling within stations is required to keep on-board electrical systems functioning. However, train operators are increasingly looking at ways to minimise the time that diesel rolling stock spends idling. This includes implementing 'stop-start' technology, where engines are stopped when the train is stationary, as well as 'shore supply' systems, where the train is connected to an external power supply within stations"

Q1:
Certain operators (Hull Trains for example) keep their engines running while stationary for periods of 30 minutes or more, belching out blue smoke in the essentially closed environment of King's Cross station.

Please tell me what plans you have in place to curb this unhealthy pollution at KX and the timescale for when you expect them to be completed ?

Q2:
Where can I view measurements of NOx and particulate pollution emitted at KX station ?

Yours faithfully,

Richard Mullens
