FOI request: Number of families accommodated under section 17 of the 1989 Children's Act

Lancaster City Council did not have the information requested.

Dear Lancaster City Council,

I am a researcher at the housing charity Shelter. We are publishing a report on homelessness in England and would like to understand how many families are being provided with accommodation under section 17 of the 1989 Children’s Act.

We would like to collect information on the number of families that are currently in housing provided under section 17 of the children’s act and the number of families placed into housing provided under section 17 of the Children’s Act in the last twelve months.

We would be incredibly grateful for your help.

I would like to request the following information under the Freedom of information Act 2000.

1. a) The number of households currently living in accommodation provided by the local authority under section 17 of the 1989 Children’s act at the end of April 2016

b) Of which, the number of families currently provided with accommodation under section 17 because:
• They did not qualify for accommodation under the 1985 and 1996 Housing Acts because they were not eligible for assistance
• They did not qualify for accommodation under the 1985 and 1996 Housing Acts because they were eligible for assistance but were found to be intentionally homeless

2. a) The number of households provided with accommodation by the local authority under section 17 of the 1989 Children’s act, in the 12 months to April 2016

b) Of which, the number of families provided with accommodation under section 17 as:
• They did not qualify for accommodation under the 1985 and 1996 Housing Acts because they were not eligible for assistance
• They did not qualify for accommodation under the 1985 and 1996 Housing Acts because they were eligible for assistance but were found to be intentionally homeless.

Many thanks,
Jenny Pennington
