Dear Department of Health,

From your recent response anyone with a gram of intelligence can conclude that cannabis in its raw form DOES have medicinal values. Otherwise why would you use the leaves and flowers of the plant in their raw form prior to adding them to chemicals to produce sativex?

Yours faithfully,

A. Clerk

Our ref: DE-1044781

Dear Mr Clerk,

Thank you for your further correspondence of 1 August about cannabis.  I
have been asked to reply.

The Government’s position on cannabis in its raw form is clear.  There are
many health harms associated with using cannabis, such as insomnia,
depression, anxiety, chronic bronchitis, lung damage, and an increase in
the risk of later developing a psychotic illness or triggering a relapse
in an individual with a pre-existing mental health illness.  There are
also societal harms, such as crime and a lack of personal motivation and
attainment.  It is for these reasons that the Government believes that
cannabis should not be legalised or decriminalised.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) operates a
clear regime to enable medicines in the UK, including those based on
controlled drugs such as cannabis, to be developed and assessed to ensure
that they are safe and effective in the treatment of patients.  The MHRA
will only grant a marketing authorisation for a new medicinal product once
it is satisfied that it is safe, effective and of an acceptable quality
for use in healthcare.

Where the manufacturers of a medicine based on cannabis extracts are able
to support an application for a marketing authorisation with convincing
evidence, the MHRA has demonstrated that it will be prepared to approve
it.  As you know, Sativex, which contains extracts from cannabis, has been
licensed by the MHRA to treat moderate to severe spasticity due to
multiple sclerosis and is currently undergoing clinical trials to explore
whether it has other potential uses.

I hope this reply is helpful.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Department of Health,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of Department of Health's handling of my FOI request 'Cannabis policy'.

Dear Department of Health,

In your response you stared

"The Government’s position on cannabis in its raw form is clear. There are
many health harms associated with using cannabis, such as insomnia,
depression, anxiety, chronic bronchitis, lung damage, and an increase in
the risk of later developing a psychotic illness or triggering a relapse
in an individual with a pre-existing mental health illness. There are

attainment. It is for these reasons that the Government believes that
cannabis should not be legalised or decriminalised."

Please provide documentary evidence to support your unjust claims. I hold professional documentary evidence to the contrary. I feel your comments amount to scaremongering.

1: "Insomnia". Sativa could cause insomnia. Indica is a fantastic sleep aid used by insomniacs worldwide.
2: "Depression and anxiety". Cannabis is effectively used to treat depression and anxiety worldwide.
3: "Chronic bronchitis, lung damage:. More and more people now use vaporizers and edibles which cause no lung damage whatsoever.
4:" Lack of personal motivation". This is strain dependant. Indica can induce lack of motivation but obviously this is down to personal choice and should be no concern of the government. Sativa does not induce lack of motivation, in fact Sativa opens up ones creativity.
5: Lack of attainment? Totally without foundation but should be no concern of the government unless we now live in an Orwellian society.
6: Crime? Please elaborate.

7: Once again I request you to please provide me with the evidence that cannabis in its raw for has no medicinal values. I don't wish for your "Opinions". I would like concrete medical evidence which I very much doubt you can provide because this is an out and out Lie!
9: If an individual chooses to use cannabis in their own home surely this is a victimless crime?
According to your comment... "It is for these reasons that the Government believes that
cannabis should not be legalised or decriminalised."
Therefore if I can provide medical evidence from medical professionals that your opinions are without foundation (which I can) then can we assume that cannabis should be decriminalized?

Incidentally, Tobacco and Alcohol cause more death and self destruction than cannabis does ten thousand fold.
Why then are they still legal?

Dear A Clerk,

Thank you for your further correspondence of 31 August about cannabis.  I
have been asked to reply.

I appreciate your continuing concerns about this matter.  However, I am
afraid that there is nothing I can add to my colleague’s previous reply of
30 August (our ref: FOI-1046450), except to reiterate that matters
regarding the legal status of cannabis are the responsibility of the Home
Office and not the Department of Health.

I am sorry if this is not the reply that you were hoping for, but as there
is nothing further that the Department can add, we must now consider this
matter to be closed.  Unless you raise a new question, any further letters
sent to the Department will be logged but may not receive a reply.

Dear Department of Health,
You have once again sidestepped my request for information,
Surely when you make such a statement as you did (copy below) you should provide the evidence to substantiate your claims when requested.
