Cycling Data

The request was successful.

Dear Lancashire County Council,

You may be aware a few months ago a website/organisation called Strava. This is a website that allows cyclists to log their rides using GPS and upload to a website and see how they stack up against other riders. At the same time strava obtains data on what routes are used by cyclists.
Last month strava teamed up with world cycling organisations across the world to encourage users to complete a “global bike to work day” https://www.strava.com/challenges/bike-t...
Strava have a part of their business called Metro or Strava Metro (more information here) http://metro.strava.com/ Millions of people upload their rides and runs to Strava every week via their smartphone or GPS device. Metro anonymizes and aggregates this data and then partners with departments of transportation and city planning groups to improve infrastructure for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Please advise in respect of cycling:

Does LCC use data from Metro, or other similar organisations (please state)
If yes, what data has been obtained (disclose the data if possible if not details of routes/areas)

If not, has or is consideration being given to accessing this data?

What projects or plans have been made/supported using information from Strava/Metro?
Where does LCC obtain data relating to the usage of roads/paths from other than Strava/Metro?

Many Thanks

Yours faithfully,

Ian Bolton
