Windows 7 and XP Instances

The request was refused by University of Northampton.

Dear University of Northampton,

I would be most grateful if you would provide me, under the Freedom of Information Act, details in respect to the following questions;

1. How many instances of the Microsoft Windows 7 Operating System are currently in operation across your entire network? How many devices such as kiosks, lap tops etc are still running Windows 7?

2. How many instances of the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System are currently in operation across your entire network ? How many devices such as kiosks, lap tops etc are still running Windows XP?

3. Who is the officer responsible for maintaining and delivering legacy applications to all your users?
Thank you for your help.

Yours faithfully,

Lee Murray

Dear Lee Murray

I write in response to your request for information dated 8^th June 2021
received by the University and passed to me as the University’s Freedom of
Information Officer for action.

In answer to your request for:

 1. How many instances of the Microsoft Windows 7 Operating System are
currently in operation across your entire network? How many devices
such as kiosks, lap tops etc are still running Windows 7?

2. How many instances of the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System are
currently in operation across your entire network ? How many devices
such as kiosks, lap tops etc are still running Windows XP?

The University has considered this information to be exempt under Section
31(1)(a) Prevention and Detection of Crime. The application of this
exemption removes the University’s duty in Section 1(1)(a) of the Freedom
of Information Act 2000 to confirm whether the information is, or is not
held.

Whilst we are in no way making comment as to the motivations of your
request, release of information via Freedom of Information responses is
effectively a release of information to the world at large. We believe
that armed with the details you have requested, unscrupulous individuals
may be able to use knowledge of known system weaknesses to launch a
cyber-attack on said systems. This could subsequently undermine the
prevention or detection of crime.

In line with the terms of this exemption in the Freedom of Information
Act, we have also considered whether it would be in the public interest
for us to provide you with the information, despite the exemption being
applicable. In this case, we have concluded that the public interest
favours withholding the information.

3.Who is the officer responsible for maintaining and delivering legacy
applications to all your users?

After careful consideration we have decided that the name of the staff
member you requested should be withheld under sections 40(2) and 40(3A) of
the FOIA as the information constitutes personal data relating to persons
other than you. These sections exempt personal information from disclosure
if that information relates to someone other than the applicant, and if
disclosure of that information would breach any of the data protection
principles in Article 5(1) of the General Data Protection Regulation
(GDPR). In this instance we believe that disclosure would likely be in
breach of the first data protection principle as staff would not
reasonably expect their name to be disclosed for the purpose of this
request for information.

I hope the University has made its response in a clear and constructive
manner; however, if you consider the University has handled your request
unfairly you are entitled to follow the process set out in the
University's [2]Freedom of Information Complaints Procedure.

Yours sincerely

Annette Reeves
