Dear British Waterways Board,

I am interested in receiving information on what wildlife monitoring is done on or around Scottish Canal property.

Specifically, can you advise on that related to birds and any bird ringing activities that might occur?

Data from the years 2014-2106 would be sufficient for my needs.

I hope to hear from you in due course.

Yours faithfully,

M Thrane

Dear M Thrane,

Further to your request for information received on 16th February and
acknowledged on 20^th February requesting information on what wildlife
monitoring is done on or around Scottish Canals property, specifically, in
relation to birds and any bird ringing activities that might occur for the
years 2014-2016, I can advise that Scottish Canals undertake monitoring
when projects on the infrastructure/estate are planned that may impact on
the environment.  Many of the projects undertaken over the period 2014-16
have been small scale and carried out by internal environmental
specialists. These surveys have focussed on protected species, such as
bats, badgers, otter and water vole.

Over the period 2014-16, Scottish Canals commissioned an overwintering
bird survey in relation to the Applecross St to Firhill Masterplan in
Glasgow. A total of 38 species were recorded during the survey. Although
sixteen of the recorded species arre afforded extra legal protection or
are species of conservation, none of the sightings constituted unusual or
unexpected records locally, with many of the species being common and
widespread overwintering birds within Glasgow. As a result, there was no
local or regional concern over the status of their numbers within the
survey area, or therefore over their conservation status.

We do not undertake any bird ringing on the canal network.

I hope this information is helpful, however, if you are dissatisfied with
the handling of your request you have the right to ask for an internal
review.  Internal review requests should be sent to the Head of Legal
Services at Scottish Canals, Canal House, Applecross Street, Glasgow G4
9SP.

If you are not content with the outcome of the internal review you have
the right to appeal directly to the Scottish Information Commissioner’s
Office, tel no.01334 464 610 enquiries@ itspublicknowledge.info or online,
using the online appeal service which may be accessed by following this

Yours sincerely,

Nicola
