Department of Justice (Northern Ireland) did not have the information requested.

Dear Department of Justice (Northern Ireland),

I am requesting the following information under the Freedom of Information Act.

Why females get less time in sentencing then males when they do the same crime.

Yours faithfully,

Joe Jordan

Bell, Angela, Department of Justice (Northern Ireland)

Dear Mr Jordan,

Thank you for your enquiry about sentencing of men and women. I note that you have made this request under the Freedom of Information Act. The information we can provide under that Act is existing recorded information held by the Department relating to the subject matter. It would be helpful if you could let me know what recorded information you are seeking (if you are seeking any such information).

As regards the question you have asked, which I consider falls outside the remit of the Freedom of Information Act, sentencing is a matter for the independent judiciary who must take account of the relevant facts and circumstances of each case. In making these decisions, judges are guided by guideline judgments from the Court of Appeal and sentencing guidance. In Northern Ireland sentencing guidelines are published on the Judicial Studies Board website which you may wish to visit. The web address is

If I can be of any further assistance please do come back to me.

Kind regards,

Angela Bell
