Why are police not stopping school teachers from punishing pupils who don't complete homework?

Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner did not have the information requested.

Dear Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner,

Please can you quote me the law which authorizes school teachers in Bristol and south Glos schools to enforce homework onto school children and then punish them if they fail to comply.

The current law in the UK is understood to be that after school has finished pupils are in their own time they no longer have obligations to do more school work if they choose not to.

This is much the same as when an empolyee finishes work for the day, they are not obliged to do other more tasks their employer wants them to do when they get home.

Homework is therefore optional and this is also the opinion of the Dept of Education who make clear that there are no Laws on Homework and that teachers should not make demands on a pupils own time for homework be completed.

The police have already been informed and have not acted to stop this form of punishment to children, so this must all be legal.

For freedom of information purposes, please quote the law on which the police base the decision not to act on.

Yours faithfully,

Jane Stack
