Whitechapel Market Subletting

Raymond Sturdy made this Freedom of Information request to Tower Hamlets Borough Council

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

We're waiting for Raymond Sturdy to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear Tower Hamlets Borough Council,

Over 80% of Whitechapel Market is subletted.

Pitches are being subletted for more than £200 a week, affecting genuine traders and taking away the opportunity for others to join.

1) What is the council doing to stop subletting?

2)How many licenses have been revoked because of subletting.

Also there have been various circumstances where confidential complaints about traders has been leaked out either by inspectors or the office itself, suggesting the lack of confidentiality. Some traders have argued that Bengali inspectors are sharing confidential information.

3) How many market inspectors can speak Bengali out of all the team?

4) Has there been any occasions where this has been reported or investigated?

Thank you for your help.

Yours faithfully,

Raymond Sturdy

In my experience market inspectors do nothing.

Dear London Borough of Tower Hamlets,

Thank you for your information.

RE: WHITECHAPEL MARKET

Why are you not enforcing Licence Condition 3.10 of the Street Trading Licence?

How many complaints of subletting has the council received, regarding Whitechapel market?

I have a query about the street trading licence - A.HUSSAIN LICENCE NO. 16829.

What percentage of trading days has the licensee been present at the stall in the past 3 months?

Also is it possible to obtain the trading attendance register of Whitechapel Market for the last 3 months?

I look forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,

Raymond Sturdy
