Dear Cabinet Office,

A recent article "CESG asserts security of open source software" published in the Guardian newspaper (8 November 2011) available here:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/government-com... (retrieved 10 November 2011) contains the following:

"[A Cabinet Office official] said that simply considering open source alternatives helps improve competition, and mentioned that he encouraged a department to pilot open source LibreOffice as an alternative to upgrading its Microsoft software. This led to Microsoft providing the new software for free."

Please may I have in electronic form:

- the name of the Department referred to by the official

- the list of software titles provided in the described arrangement

- the number (or reasonable estimate) of devices for which the software were obtained and/or installed

- any background papers relating to the discussion between the Cabinet Office official and officials of the subject Department

Thank you

Yours faithfully,
