The request was partially successful.

SELVAKUMAR RAMACHANDRAN

Dear Sunderland City Council,

Congratulations for Sunderland being one of five shortlisted for City of Culture 2021. I am sure Sunderland City has all the values to be the City of Culture 2021.

I would like to have following information:

1. List of restaurants, take aways and eat outs which are wheelchair accessible including the toilets for wheelchair users.

2. Does Sunderland City council take any steps to ensure restaurants are accessible? If so, please provide the steps that you are taking?

Please provide them and it will be useful not only for the residents of Sunderland but also for the people who visit Sunderland.

Yours faithfully,
Dr. Selvakumar Ramachandran

I have been trying to force Sunderland Council for over 4 years to make businesses in Sunderland comply to the Disability Discrimination Act. I afraid they do absolutely nothing to promote or enforce the act.

OCEFOI, Sunderland City Council

Dear Dr. Selvakumar Ramachandran,

I refer to your recent request for information under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000.  I can confirm that the Council only holds part of
this information, as detailed below.

1. List of restaurants, take aways and eat outs which are wheelchair
accessible  including the  toilets for wheelchair users. The Council does
not hold this information

2.  Does Sunderland City council take any steps to ensure restaurants are
accessible? If so, please provide the steps that you are taking? Any new
buildings or alterations to premises would be required to provide access
for wheelchairs and accessible toilet accommodation and would be assessed
in relation to Building Regulations if the Council received a Building
Regulations Application .

I hope this is satisfactory.  If, however, you are dissatisfied with our
response to your request for information, you can ask for the decision to
be reviewed in reply to this letter.  The review will be removed from the
Directorate and coordinated by the Council’s Information Governance
Officer.   A request for review should be directed, by email to
[1][Sunderland City Council request email], by post or by hand addressed to;
Information Governance Officer, Governance Services, Civic Centre, PO Box
100, Sunderland SR2 7DN.

You are of course entitled to apply to the Information Commissioner at any
time, although the Commissioner will not usually investigate until the
public authority’s internal review procedure has been concluded.

Kind Regards

The reply you have been sent from Mr Hanratty is not truthful. I can show you many buildings in Sunderland which do not have disabled access following major building works.
