What is meant by "Computer Science" in the graduate destinations by subject area statistics?

Dear Higher Education Statistics Agency,

The statistics I am talking about is in Table F in: https://www.hesa.ac.uk/data-and-analysis...

It says "Computer Science" under the science subject areas. What exactly does this encompass? Does it, for example, include Informational Technology degrees, Information Management degrees, etc. or does it only include Computer Science degrees.

Yours faithfully,

James Lawrence

Hi James,

We use a standard subject coding system. Computer Science breaks down into a whole range of more detailed, 4 digit subjects - as can be seen in section I - Computer Sciences here: https://www.hesa.ac.uk/support/documenta...

Subject data is different to course title data, in the sense that up to three subject codes can be used to describe one course. More detail can be found on our definitions page here: https://www.hesa.ac.uk/support/definitio...

I hope that helps.

Kind Regards

Rebecca

Dear Rebecca Haslam,

Thank you for your reply. Am I then right to say that the subject area in the graduate destinations table (linked in my original post) called "Computer science" is actually describing the broader subject area of "Computer sciences"? If so, then in the future please change the name to "Computer sciences" rather than "Computer science" as the two are quite different and have been causing many misunderstandings.

Also, would it be possible to see the graduate destination data specifically for "Computer science" (subject code I100)?

Yours sincerely,

James Lawrence

Rebecca Haslam, Higher Education Statistics Agency

Hi James,

Yes, Computer Science in the table you reference, incorporates all the four digit codes beginning with I. Our standard JACS subject coding refers to the subject area of Computer Science rather than Computer Sciences (as shown here: https://www.hesa.ac.uk/support/documenta... )

We are currently in the process of changing the way in which we classify subjects, moving from the JACS framework to HECos: https://www.hesa.ac.uk/innovation/hecos If you have particular comments regarding these, there are contact details at the bottom of that webpage.

I can compile a free of charge data request for you to get data for

Destination of full-time first degree leavers who studied (I100) Computer Science 2014/15 by
Activity (Work/Work and further study/Further study/Unemployed/Other)

Would you like to receive the rounded numbers, or the percentages?

Kind Regards

Rebecca
