GRO Policy,

Dear Mr Horn

Apologies for the delay in responding to your enquiry. As my colleague
advised in his email of 27 April we have treated your request as "official
correspondence" rather than under the provisions of the Freedom of
Information Act, but that has made no difference to the content of our
reply.

You asked the following questions, to which I've added our response:

Q1. Beyond the details provided by the notification and the entry or
record number what other information is recorded against the entry?

A: Information for the birth register entry comes from the informant
(usually one of the parents). No other information is recorded against a
birth registration. The notification is evidence of the birth and also
provides statistical (medical) information in respect of the mother and
child.

Q2. If any other information is entered what is the source of that
information

A: As above.

Once the birth is registered

Q1. Who does your authority notify in any format  of the entry? - other
departments, offices organisation, persons including their contact
details.

A: There are  legal gateways to provide registration data to The Office
for National Statistics (Statistics and Registration Act 2007 s42) and
National Health Service (National Health Service Act 2006 s270) and the
local Education Authority ( Education Act 1996). These notifications are
provided either on paper or by electronic means.

Q2. Who has direct access to the registers information without having to
go through requesting it from yourselves? - other departments, offices
organisation, persons including their contact details.

A: Whist indexes to births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships are
public, no one has direct access to the registers, information from them
can only be released in the form of a certified copy (a certificate).
Certificates are available either from the register office of the district
where the event took place or the GRO

Kind regards

Melanie

Dear GRO Policy,

Thank you for your reply.

I am unable to reconcile your answer to my first question from the procedure that occurred on the births of my children.
Neither the mother nor myself informed the registrar of the births of our children's, yet you have stated that the informant is usually one of the parents.
Q1 - Who informed the registrar?
Q2 - How did they inform the registrar?
You have further stated additional information is entered that you detail as "statistical (medical) information in respect of the mother and child"
Q3 - What is that information?
Q4 - What is the source of that information?

Thank you as well for the remaining answers and I will follow those up with separate FOI's

Yours sincerely,

Marc Horn
