What does "resident" mean for car insurance purposes?

Dear Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency,
I mainly live in Hong kong but spend 3-4 months in the Uk where I was born and own a house for my sole occupancy. i am not resident for tax purposes as currently defined but no one seems to have any real, consistent, idea of what resident means when insuring my Uk car. When I live here I am resident since I live here in my own house (and when not pay council and other taxes) and have a permanent Uk address which seems enough for some insurers but not others. I dont want to end up in an argument with insurers if a claim is made so is there an Uk govt definition I can rely on?

Yours faithfully,Keith
