What are the statistical models used to prioritise the selection of providers for inspection

John Winstanley

Dear Office for Standards in Education,

Your team published a document called “Framework for School Inspection” here http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/resources/frame... (Last updated 4th April 2014)

Paragraphs 25 – 39 of the document define the high-level process that determines when an individual school would be inspected. In particular paragraph 28 defines at a high level the components that are considered when performing a risk assessment, which is used to determine when a school is due for inspection, for example pupils’ attendance.

Your team published a document called “Statistical Work Plan” here http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/resources/stati... (Last updated 13th May 2014)

Which states

“Data and Insight provides – and will review – statistical models to prioritise the selection of providers for inspection. This ensures that inspection resources are focused where they are most needed and can make most difference.”

Could your team kindly provide;

1. The document or set of documents that define the exact statistical models that are currently used to prioritise the selection of providers for inspection?

2. For the six components of the risk assessment (outlined in paragraph 28 of the “Framework for School Inspection”), how are the components interpreted? For example does absence of 10% equate to a score and if so how is that score then interpreted to determine which schools are due an inspection?

Yours faithfully,

John Winstanley
