Matthew McCoig-Lees, General Medical Council

Dear Mr Roberts

I write further to previous correspondance with a response under the
Freedom of Information Act 2000.

I have been provided with the following policies we have which concern
paid leave:

• Sick Leave- The amount of GMC sick pay staff receive depends on how
long they have worked at the GMC. Employees with less than a year of
service receive 4 weeks contractual sick pay (CSP) (at full pay), 1-2
years service is 8 weeks CSP, 3-4 years service is 12 weeks CSP and 5+
years is 26 weeks CSP. Once they have received their entitlement to
GMC sick pay, they will normally only be paid statutory sick pay (if
eligible) for any additional sickness absence.

• Maternity/Adoption Leave- Employees with 26 weeks continuous service
with GMC at the beginning of the fifteenth week before their expected
week of childbirth, and the employee has followed the notification
requirements detailed in the policy, then they will receive: 18 weeks
pay at their normal salary, 8 weeks ordinary maternity leave at the
statutory rate, 13 weeks of additional maternity leave at the
statutory rate of pay, 13 further weeks of additional maternity leave
at no pay. All non-qualifying employees would be applicable under
government statutory rates.

• Paternity Leave- 4 weeks leave with full pay, if they have 26 weeks
continuous service with GMC. All non qualifying employees would be
applicable under government statutory rates.

• Bereavement/Compassionate Leave- Manager discretion, paid up to 2
weeks per instance.

• Annual leave-  30 days paid leave per annum if the staff member is a
full time employee. It is pro-rated for part time employees.

• IVF Leave: Full time staff can take up to five days paid leave a year.
We will give paid leave for up to a maximum of three cycles of IVF.
For part time staff part-time, the entitlement will be pro-rated and
they can take a week’s worth of paid leave.

• Medical appointment leave- Staff are encouraged to make appointments
out of work time. However if it must be in the working day, they are
not expected to work the time back, however they are advised to try
and arrange medical appointments at the start or end of the working
day to limit disruption.

• Jury service leave- full pay, as long as procedure has been followed.

• Magistrate service leave- We will aim to support colleagues elected as
a magistrate by accommodating an agreed amount of paid leave for court
sittings. Staff should agree the details with your manager in advance.

• Employer Supported Policing- If a staff member is a special constable,
we will support them through the Employer Supported Policing
programme. As a special constable, they can take paid leave for 50% of
their training time (usually one or two days a year). They can also
take up to 4 hours paid leave per month to undertake their duties. In
addition, should there be a significant emergency, we may be able to
approve additional paid leave for them to undertake your duties.

• Domestic Abuse Policy- We can give employees time in work hours to
contact helplines or attend appointments and this is agreed with line
managers on a local basis.

I hope this information is helpful. If you have any comments on how your
request has been handled please email [1][GMC request email].

Kind Regards

Matt
