What are the differences between alcohol and cannabis? why is alcohol legal and cannabis illegal?

The request was partially successful.

Dear House of Lords,
Hi I am having a bit of a dilemma I just cannot figure out what the differences are between the legality of alcohol vs cannabis.
How can you allow/ legalise alcohol and not allow cannabis?
Is alcohol safe?
what are the determining facts that allow one and not the other?
I lost my father many friends and even my local mp Charles Kennedy due to alcohol but have never heard of anyone dying from cannabis.
Why is alcohol legal?
Why is cannabis illegal?

Yours faithfully,

Hry420 Heather Newsome
