What action has been taken to warn of harm in rice milk products
Dear Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Limited,
I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information act. I am contacting you regarding the levels of arsenic present in rice milk which scientists have found to be extremely harmful to children, being linked to the development of some forms of cancer. You may know the NHS already advised parents not to feed rice milk, which contains the natural poison, to under-fives.
I am contacting you to ask what measures have been taken, if any, to provide sufficient information to customers on the dangers of this product and if the company is presenting clear and correct labeling on products to warn of the harms.
If nothing has been done thus far, I would like to know why, and whether or not the store has clear objectives to adjust the labeling of these products to give concise information and warnings.
Yours faithfully,
Anna Black

Dear Ms Black
Thank you for your patience.
Arsenic is naturally present in the environment and can therefore occur in
agricultural crops such as rice. Whilst there is no legal limit applied
to rice, Sainsbury’s has always applied its own limit that our suppliers
must meet and this is verified through routine testing. Our limit is
based on total arsenic, which includes the type of arsenic reported by the
Independent (inorganic arsenic) and we are confident that our products
will meet any legislative requirement set in the future.
We appreciate you taking the time to contact us and we hope to see you in
store again soon.
Kind regards
Ryan Gray
