Welsh Government spending on international relations

The request was successful.

Dear Welsh Government,

How much does the Welsh Government spend per year (ie: the most recent year-long period for which there is data) on activities that may be considered international relations not directly linked to trade. For example hosting foreign dignitaries, international travel to promote Wales, climate change summits etc etc ?

Yours faithfully,

David Jones

Dear Welsh Government,

Thanks Michael.

1. Please could you provide a detailed breakdown of those associated activities for the 2021/22 year including the individual costs for each?

(ie: the hosting of representatives of foreign governments, international visits and activity to
promote Wales including St David’s Day, engagement at climate change and sustainability
summits, soft power engagement and public diplomacy, diaspora engagement, events at
Dubai Expo, our Wales in Germany initiative, bilateral country and regional cooperation,
international celebrations such as Diwali, marketing and communications).

2. Additionally, which representatives of foreign governments were hosted in the year 2021/22?

3. Also for clarity, is diaspora engagement only referring to Welsh diaspora? Or diaspora of other groups?

Yours faithfully,

David Jones

Dear Welsh Government,

Under the freedom of information act, I would like to request:

Given the fact that there is a £380,802 disparity between the cost of cross-cutting activity stated in response to request ATISN 16595 and in the response to ATISN 16704. Please could this amount be clarified and broken down.

One of these amounts is clearly incorrect. Please could you clarify this disparity and tell me what this money was spent on? Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

David Jones

Welsh Government

Dear Mr Jones

In response to your request below for clarity on the disparity between the
two figures, I can confirm that the figure in ATISN 16595 (£1,428,000) was
the budget for our cross-cutting activity for 2021-22. As stated in the
response to ATISN 16595, we did not hold the information in the format
that you requested, instead we provided the clearest breakdown available
which was the budget allocated to different areas rather than a) not
provide any information, or b) provide a mix of allocated budget and
actual spend which would have been unclear.

Based on the information we provided in ATISN 16595, you then requested a
breakdown of the spend for our cross-cutting budget activity which we were
able to provide in full. The figure in ATISN 16704 (£1,047,198) is the
actual amount spent on our cross-cutting activity during 2021-22.
Therefore the £380,802 identified in your query below is the difference
between budget allocated and money spent, which works out as an
underspend.

I hope this helps to explain the discrepancy. My apologies for any
confusion inadvertently caused.

Kind regards
Louise
