At 22:14 on the 9th of July 2018, an earthquake occurred near Wood Farm in Sunk Island, East Yorkshire. Grid Reference 53.648 -0.055 (Source: British Geological Survey).

The location is just 14 miles from the well pad known as West Newton A, East Yorkshire, operated by Rathlin Energy.

Please could HSE tell me

1. Are you (the HSE) and/or Rathlin Energy going to take action to inspect the well at the site known as West Newton A to assess and determine well damage?
Yes or No.

2. Details of any inspections to be undertaken by you (the HSE) and/ or Rathlin, including date /time period and all/any details of the assessment procedure.

3. Have you (the HSE) and/or Rathlin Energy already taken action to inspect the well at the site known as West Newton A in East Yorkshire to assess and determine well damage?
Yes or No.

4. Any/All details of any actions to assess and determine well damage that you (the HSE) and/or Rathlin Energy have already undertaken at the site known as West Newton A and all/any conclusions/findings.

Well damage at West Newton A site.

 

Your request was received on 7th July 2018 and I am dealing with it under
the terms of the Environmental Information Regulations 2004.

 

I can confirm that the Health and Safety Executive holds the following
responses to your queries as set out below:

 

o Are you (the HSE) and/or Rathlin Energy going to take action to
inspect the well at the site known as West Newton A to assess and
determine well damage?

A    HSE has not inspected Rathlin’s site as a reaction to the earthquake,
however, we will be conducting an inspection as per our intervention plan,
based on well operations carried out by Rathlin.

 

o Details of any inspections to be undertaken by you (the HSE) and/or
Rathlin, including date/time period, and all/any details of the
assessment procedure.

A    As mentioned above we plan an inspection in line with our
intervention plan.

 

o Have you (the HSE) and/or Rathlin Energy already taken action to
inspect the well at the site known as West Newton A in East Yorkshire
to assess and determine well damage?

A    Since the recent earthquakes, Rathlin has been routinely inspecting
this site and inspected on dates: June 14, 22 and 28 and again on July 6.

 

o Any/all details of any action to assess and determine well damage that
you (the HSE) and/or Rathlin Energy have already undertaken at the
site known as West Newton A and all/any conclusions/findings.

A    HSE has not been notified or made aware of any loss of integrity or
damage on any well operated by Rathlin Energy in the area in question. 
Based on the inspection dates above by Rathlin, there have been no changes
noted at this site.
