Weed Growth A59 within City of York Council boundaries

The request was successful.

Dear City of York Council,
Highways England has confirmed that the local authority is responsible for weed control on the A59. There are particular problems with weed growth in the drainage gullies, on (and around) traffic islands and on some footpaths particularly near Poppleton. They represent potential trip hazards and can block sight lines. The main issue is that they blight an approach to the City which is well used by visitors.

Would you please say;

1. Whether the road has been included in your weed killing contract and if so on how many occasions, and when, has weed spraying work been undertaken this summer?

2. If the road is not included in the weed control contract, please indicate whom and when made this decision? Please indicate what alternative actions have been taken by the authority over the last 4 months to ensure that the highway is free of weed growth?

3. When can residents expect this road to be clear of significant weed growth?

Yours faithfully,

Steve Galloway

Stone, Russell, City of York Council

Dear Mr Galloway,

Freedom of Information

Please see below the response to your enquiry under the Freedom of
Information Act received on the 20^th August 2019.

1.   Whether  the road has been included in your weed killing contract and
if so on how many occasions, and when, has weed spraying work been
undertaken this summer?

This location is not specifically listed in the contract.

2. If the road is not included in the weed control contract, please
indicate whom and when made this decision? Please indicate what
alternative actions have been taken by the authority over the last 4
months  to ensure that the highway is free of weed growth?

This list of streets to be treated was drawn up many years ago under the
old client/contractor regime, a review of areas that are not sprayed and a
process for Cllr engagement in this will form part of the considerations
in a report to the Executive Member in October.

3. When can residents expect this road to be clear of significant weed
growth?

The weeds will be manually removed during the next 10 working days.

If you are dissatisfied with our response you have the right to ask for a
review of how your enquiry was handled and responded to. This can be done
by contacting us through [1][City of York Council request email] stating your reason(s) why you
