Weather station locations
Dear Environment Agency,
I am interested in weather stations. If you maintain any weather stations, please could I have a list of them, including their names and locations. Ideal would be an extract from the MIDAS database.
Yours faithfully,
David Jones

Dear David,
Further to your national request Ref: NROCT50 asking for Weather Stations
information, we have had a couple of responses back from our area
offices asking you to clarify some of the details for us.
After speaking to one of our specialist in our North West South area,
I have been informed that they do not have any Weather Stations, however
we do monitor Rainfall via Rain Gauge Stations and we monitor Wind Speed
and Wind Direction. We don't have a Station that monitors everything
together in that particular area.
I am happy to provide you with the link below from which you will be able
to access Rain Gauge information.
[1]http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/hif...
Our Welsh area has commented that we do have 1 Weather Station in North
Wales, although this is currently under review to move over to MET office
control.
They suggest that you could look at the Met Office website below for
further information on Weather Stations.

Once you have clarified the above details we can provide you with more
specific information.
Kind regards,

Dear National Requests,
I'm interested in any station regardless of how few meteorological variables it measures. If you have station that measure only rainfall, or only windspeed, then I would still regard that as a weather station. I'm pretty sure rain and wind count as weather :).
So please can I have the names and locations of those stations.
Is your welsh office being a bit secretive? Can I please have the name and location of the station that they operate.
The website you pointed me at, http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/hif... , appears to be related to flow gauges, not rain gauges. Whilst I'm sure that one day I will develop an interest in river flows, it wasn't what I was intending to request. Whilst I could find mentions of your rain gauge network (eg, http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/res... ) I couldn't find any info as to their locations.
I would prefer a list of the Met Office SRC_ID values for the stations you maintain (you probably use the SRC_ID to transmit the data to the Met Office), I can then find out for myself what type of station they are.
Yours sincerely,
David Jones
Dear David,
Thank you for replying to my email with the information requested.
After further investigation I have found out that what you call a Weather
Station we call Climate Sites.
I have spoken to our National Rainfall Specialist who can provide
a national list of Rainfall Sites which are measured by time of tip.
Our Specialist can also provide a national list of Storage Rainfall Sites
and filter for the parameters you want, for example Wind.
I have asked her to compile the 2 lists for you.
The Climate station in our Welsh area is called Bala Climate Station and
located in Bala.
Once I have all the information together we will be able to provide it to
you.
I have asked our Hydrometry and Telemetry Teams about your comments below.
"I would prefer a list of the Met Office SRC_ID values for the stations
you maintain (you probably use the SRC_ID to transmit the data to the Met
Office), I can then find out for myself what type of station they are".
Our Teams do not recognise the term SRC_ID, this terminology maybe purely
related to the MET Office.
Should you have any further comments to add please do not hesitate to
contact us.
Kind regards,
Belinda

Dear National Requests,

Aha, useful to know!

Thanks.
You write: "Our Specialist can also provide a national list of Storage Rainfall Sites and filter for the parameters you want, for example Wind."
I'm not sure I understand. If the list has a parameter (wind/rain/pressure) for each site, then no need to filter, as I can filter that myself.
You write: "I have asked her to compile the 2 lists for you.".
Thanks.

Dear National Requests,
Imagine my disappointment on finding that I cannot open the "zip" file that you attached.
I'm using an Apple Mac, and I expect that having a password on the zip file is the problem.
Can you please attach a zip file with the same contents but no password? As it is, I cannot see any of the information I requested.
Yours sincerely,
David Jones
