A Home Office Civil Servant

Dear Ministry of Defence,

It is my understanding that soldiers serving in the British army are not permitted to accept or wear the NATO "ISAF" medal on their uniforms as they would have received an alternative British campaign medal such as the Operational Service Medal.

If a British soldier on detachment with an allied force that does accept the NATO "ISAF" Medal, such as the United States military, completed a sufficient period of service to qualify for the medal, would they be permitted to (a) accept it and (b) wear the medal on British army uniform as a foreign award?

Yours faithfully,

Mike Ferguson
