Dear Yorkshire Water Services Limited,

I would like to request some information on water fluoride levels for a public health research study at the University of Manchester.

Please can you supply:

1. Water fluoride concentration sample data (consumer tap samples) for every Water Supply Zone within the regions that you supply water to, for every year from 2009-2020?

Please supply this in Mg of fluoride per litre, with the date of the sample, and the Water Supply Zone name and zone code, preferably as an Excel file.

2. GIS Shapefile maps showing the Water Supply Zone boundaries for every year from 2009-2020.

Many thanks in advance,

Blessing

Dear Blessing Nyakutsikwa,

I refer to your request for information submitted to Yorkshire Water dated
21 August 2020.

Please find attached the data which you have requested.  Included with
this email is the answer to your questions in red.

1. Water fluoride concentration sample data (consumer tap samples) for
every Water Supply Zone within the regions that you supply water to, for
every year from 2009-2020?

Please supply this in Mg of fluoride per litre, with the date of the
sample, and the Water Supply Zone name and zone code, preferably as an
Excel file.

Please find attached the relevant fluoride data as requested titled
‘Fluoride_CurrentWS_2009 to 2020 V2.xlsx.’

Water Supply Zones are not static structures, and have changed
substantially over this period. We have taken the approach of mapping off
the data against the current WSZ structure (which was implemented in
2019).

Identifiable location data has been removed.

2. GIS Shapefile maps showing the Water Supply Zone boundaries for every
year from 2009-2020.

Please find attached the relevant GIS data as requested titled
‘YKS_2009_WSZ & YKS_2015_WSZ & YKS_2017_WSZ & YKS_2019_WSZ’

For some years the water supply zones have not changed at all or have had
minor amendments. There were some significant changes to the water supply
zones for the years 2009, 2015, 2017 and 2019; attached to this email are
the maps for these years.

I trust that the provision of this data satisfies your request.  In
accordance with the Environmental Information Regulations 2004, if you are
not satisfied with this reply to your request you can ask for an internal
review.  A request for an internal review must be submitted within 40
working days by contacting the Data Protection Team.

Thank you for contacting Yorkshire Water.

Yours sincerely,

Dear EIR Compliance, Rebecca Dovener

Thank you for your response and for providing the data. For my second request, could you provide the GIS data as shapefiles rather than pdf maps? This would allow me to link the WSZs and Fluoride concentrations to their relative locations. As stated in my earlier correspondence, I am part of a research group in the Department of Dental Public Health at the University of Manchester, and we require this information for a research study looking at the cost-effectiveness of water fluoridation for preventing dental treatments in adults.

We are planning to link anonymised NHS dental practice data for the whole country with water fluoride concentrations, to see if there are fewer fillings and extractions (and lower NHS and patient costs) in those patients who have lived in areas with higher fluoride levels over the last ten years. We will include natural as well as artificial, with 0.7 Mg F/L as our cut-off.

More info about the study is available at https://fundingawards.nihr.ac.uk/award/N...

If they are confidentiality concerns we are willing to sign a confidentiality agreement as well as have a phone call conversation further explaining the purpose of our study and why we need this data. My email address is [email address]. You could also provide me with an attachment highlighting how I can contact you directly to discuss further

Yours sincerely,

Blessing Nyakutsikwa
