war department Information
Dear Wandsworth Borough Council,
I have had unofficial conversation with a council official and I have been made aware, that during the second world war a large number of private properties in Wandsworth were evacuated due to their proximity to bomb blasts.eg the next few houses immediately neighbouring an bomb explosion, these properties were alleged to have been held by the WD/MOD (and the owners compensated) until shortly after WW2 when they were given to the local council to rent and rehouse people who had lost their homes in the war.
This is well known and chronicled, my question is this,
When the said properties were "given back" by the WD was there an instruction made that in effect said that as the council had been given the properties for no cost. that if they (the council) ever sold the freehold to the said dwellings, then they would only be able or entitled to charge the original value of the freehold at the time they (wandsworth council) acquired them.
Yours faithfully,
R WC HOMAN

Dear Freedom Of Information,
Sir
Firstly thankyou for your reply, there are a few further queries
I use the phrase "given back" purely as terminology, in that i do not know what term you would use to describe this action
can you inform me categorically how or by what mechanism Wandsworth council (and or its predescors whichever name that it was known by) acquired any type of property or land in or out of the borough during or after either world war due too explosion or bomb damage both as direct hit and also as blast zone damage
in Wandsworth there are a significant number of houses that were built on the site of bomb damaged property or land these houses occur in virtually every street across battersea battersea park clapham junction northcote road wandsworth wandsworth common balham tooting bec tooting amen corner etc, the replacement houses are newer than the originals and in most cases are or certainly originally were owned and managed by the council, (before the homesteading programme of the early 1980's) the land and the surrounding damaged buildings must have come under council control somehow, maybe my terminology is wrong but the fact remains the same the council acquired houses and or land as a result of wartime action in Wandsworth which were then repaired or rebuilt and put into the housing stock
please by way of answer do not just paraphrase what i have written and reuse my terminology to appear to answer my question
this is a serious request please respond in the same manner
sincerely

Dear Freedom Of Information,
the term "aquired" is quite vague, is it legitmate to enquire by what means the council "aquired" the property
I have made a land registry enquiry in the past and the seed point for information does not go back to the beginning of the life of the property,
I am trying to fill in the blanks so to speak, if the council have information on this point it would be very helpfull to know
thanks
