Waking Watch Fire Wardens
Dear London Fire Commissioner (London Fire Brigade),
What research, if any, have you carried out to determine whether 'waking watch' fire wardens in residential buildings work, and are effective at protecting life in a fire?
Have you made any attempt in the past year to gather evidence as to their effectiveness? I'd like all available records of that please, and the resulting data.
Yours faithfully,
Rachael Venables
Dear Rachael
Thank you for your request.
This will be considered under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and we
will respond as soon as we are able. Please note, given the current
situation with the Coronavirus, this may be outside of the normal,
expected timeframe for a FOI response (20 working days).
Thank you for your patience,
with kind regards
Michelle Essiet

Dear Racheal
Thank you for your Freedom of Information request, received on 09/7/2021
in relation to Waking Watch Fire Wardens.
In response, the LFB have not yet undertaken any specific research on the
effectiveness of waking watches.
You may wish to redirect your query to the Ministry of Housing,
Communities and Local Government (MHCLG). The LFB is not responsible for
recommending or instructing landlords to introduce waking watches. This
was a recommendation from The MHCLG (formerly the Department for
Communities and Local Government) in June 2017 to implement interim
mitigating measures to ensure the safety of residents, pending replacement
of the cladding.
You may also be interested to know that each building with a waking watch
has a bespoke implementation of the measures suggested by the NFCC
(National Fire Chiefs Council) guidance
([1]https://www.nationalfirechiefs.org.uk/Si...)
depending on its individual design and existing provisions (for example,
waking watches are not just used for ACM cladding, they can be implemented
because of other fire safety reasons such as compartmentation issues,
etc).
I hope you find this information of use. We have dealt with your request
under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. For more information about this
process please see the guidance we publish about making a request [2]on
our website.
Kind regards,
Michelle Essiet
