VPN blocking costs
Dear British Broadcasting Corporation,
I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
Please tell me:
-How many IP addresses have been blocked from accessing BBC iPlayer because they were suspected of being used by a VPN (virtual private network) provider?
Please provide the figure for the following years: 2013-14, 2014-15, 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019 so far.
-For each of the above years, please tell me how much money was spent on tackling this issue. This would include costs associated with hiring staff to tackle VPN use, technology that was purchased and other expenses.
-How many people do you understand to watch BBC iPlayer for free from outside of the UK? Previous BBC reports put the figure at approx 65m.
Yours faithfully,
Shanti Das
