Dear Information Compliance Shared mailbox,

I apologise but I need to make the following clarifications with respect to my request:

1) Please only consider statistics regarding PhD students and disregard any other form of award that undergoes viva examinations (e.g. EngD, etc).
2) Please count any resubmission result as part of its own category and do not include it in the failure category.

I'm aware that this changes the nature of my request somewhat. Please let me know if this is possible.

Yours sincerely,
Michael Lee

Our Ref. FOI1463

Dear Michael Lee

Further to your request for information, the University's response is
below:

I request the following. For each school within the university and for
each academic year from 2006 to 2016 please provide:

1) The total number of viva examinations that took place for that school's
students for that year.

We confirm that we hold the data, however due to the way in which the data
is held, the University believes that extracting it would fall under the
exemption in Section 12 of the Freedom of Information Act (where a request
will cost more than 18 hours @ £25 per hour (£450)).

2) The total number of viva examinations in which a student successfully
passed.

We are able to confirm the total number of viva examinations in which a
student successfully passed from the data for certificates produced from
07/07/2006 onwards. This is based on how many PhDs have been awarded since
07/07/2006. There may be some fluctuations in figures year by year due to
the fact that this is the date their certificate was processed, meaning
that their viva may have been in the academic year beforehand:

07/07/2006 – End of 2006 academic year – 45

2006/07 – 84

2007/08 - 81

2008/09 -159

2009/10 – 99

2010/11 – 83

2011/12 – 120

2012/13 – 113

2013/14 – 138

2014/15 – 146

2015/16 – 139

Due to the way in which the data is held by the University we are unable
to break these figures down by School.

3) Total that failed (please count conversion to MSc as a failure).

We confirm that we hold the data, however due to the way in which the data
is held, the University believes that extracting it would fall under the
exemption in Section 12 of the Freedom of Information Act (where a request
will cost more than 18 hours @ £25 per hour (£450)).

Clarification: 1) Please only consider statistics regarding PhD students
and disregard any other form of award that undergoes viva examinations
(e.g. EngD, etc).

         2) Please count any resubmission result as part of its own
category and do not include it in the failure category.

Please note that the University has a formal complaints procedure. If you
are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your request
and wish to make a complaint or request a review of our decision you
should write to the University’s Planning & Governance Office in the first
instance ([1][Bangor University request email]) explaining the grounds for your
complaint. In line with guidance from the Information Commissioner’s
Office, an appeal request must be submitted within two months of the
University’s final response to this Freedom of Information Act request.

Kind regards,

Compliance Team
