Dear E Douglass
Thank you for your request for information on 12th June about: Violence
against teachers
Please see the response to your request below:
Can you please provide the yearly breakdown, of abuse against teachers
(from students) in primary and secondary schools since 2018/19 academic
year.
Response:
Much of this data is not held by the authority and is instead held by each
school independently, and as such the gathering of accurate data would
prove impossible for a number of reasons.
• Inaccessibility to the data, schools record incidents involving
behaviour of pupils involving physical/verbal abuse towards peers and
staff along with damage to property, behaviour dysregulation. The vast
majority of these incidents are dealt with in school and do not reach a
threshold for referral to the LA.
Some instances may have been reported to our Health and Safety Team but
would not be an accurate record of all instances.
• Schools each have MY CONCERN for recording all safeguarding matters
relating to pupils, this could be pupil on pupil, parent on pupil, pupil
on parent, pupil on carer. Whilst there are categories of abuse recorded
on MY CONCERN, there is not the recording mechanism to filter just pupil
on pupil and pupil on teacher
• To achieve what the requester is asking I feel would take a considerable
amount of time and it would not necessarily be accurate. In addition not
all schools used MY CONCERN until 2021, so for years 17,18,18,20, there
may only be paper records held by each school.
In summary, accurate records will be held by each individual school and
only partial/incomplete data is held by the authority and is not easily
retrievable
If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you have the
right to ask for an internal review. Internal review requests should be
submitted within two months of the date of receipt of the response to your
original letter and should be addressed to: The Monitoring Officer, Civic
Offices, Holton Road, Barry, CF63 4RU.

communications.
If you are not content with the outcome of the internal review, you have
the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a
decision.
