THE future of an “essential” pop in centre for young people has been secured with a quarter of a million pound grant.
Staff at Prestatyn Pop In Centre were celebrating last week after being told the organisation has been awarded £269,125 by the BIG Lottery Fund.
Jonathan White, Centre Manager said that since January the Pop In Centre has worked with 150 youngsters who got involved with cookery lessons, an outdoor activity residential visit, job club, IT workshops, a sexual health service and sports activities.
He said: “The investment from the lottery will enable us to maintain these essential services in Prestatyn as well as expanding them in to nearby rural communities.”
Veronica Wells, founder of the Pop In Centre and Chair of Trustees said the grant was a testament to the hard work and commitment of the staff and volunteers who made the centre a success.
“The money will provide great benefits for the young people in the area and will make such a big difference to the lives of those who use the facilities at the centre.”
Youngsters who attend the centre were also presented with a £200 cheque from Suzanne Wharton from Prestatyn Neighbourhood Policing Team for activities over the Easter holidays.
As well as a weekend camping trip to Anglesey and a day trip to the Albert Docks youngsters have also taken part in a community project to tidy up parts of the Hillside Gardens in upper Prestatyn.
A spokesperson for the Offa’s Dyke Community Interest Company said: “Walking tourism is a lucrative market and should form an essential part of Prestatyn’s tourism strategy, the town has so much to offer stretching from the beach to the hillside. We are delighted to have the support of the Pop In centre and appreciate their hard work in helping to keep the gardens free of litter.”
Yours sincerely
