VBAC policy and stats

The request was partially successful.

Dear Sirs

This is a request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

1. Please supply a copy of the Trust's policy regarding vaginal birth after Caesarean section (VBAC).

2. Please supply a list of any exclusions/restrictions the Trust would apply to a VBAC i.e. would you accommodate homebirths, waterbirths, access to your midwifery-led units or birth centres?

3. Please advise on how these practice points alter (if at all) should the VBAC follow multiple Caesarean sections.

4. Please provide:
(a) your most up-to-date VBAC success rate statistics, including, if available:
(i) the number of women who have had a previous Caesarean section who booked for maternity care;
(ii) the number of those women who attempted a VBAC; and
(iii) the number of those women who achieved a vaginal birth;

(b) your most recent statistics relating to numbers of births, including:
(i) how many of these were unassisted normal births;
(ii) how many were instrumental deliveries;
(iii) how many were Caesarean sections; and
(iv) the most recent statistics relating to how many of the Caesarean sections were elective and how many were emergencies; and

(c) if available, statistics relating to how many planned VBACs resulted in normal birth and how many in repeat Caesarean section, to the extent not already covered under 4(a) above.

If possible, please provide the above statistics for each hospital, unit or birth centre within your Trust.

Thank you in advance for your time.
