FOI REQUESTS (RDE) Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Tr,

Dear Mr Singh,

Thank you for your request under the Freedom of Information Act (FOI).

You requested:

Regarding vascular surgery reconfiguration in your area:

     1. Currently how many vascular surgeons are working at your trust,

please include wte for consultants and numbers of junior doctors?

At Colchester Hospital there are 3 Vascular Surgeons - junior doctors are
not assigned to the vascular surgeons, they rotate through the surgical
department

     2. What on call rota do the vascular surgical consultants cover

     currently?

1:6 provided in conjunction with Ipswich Hospital

     3. What catchment area do they cover?

Colchester Hospital services are provided to the population of Northeast
Essex and part of mid Essex. This equates to approximately 370,000

4.Is a review planned or has one been performed regarding vascular

surgery reconfiguration in your area, please provide dates of

     review?

Colchester Hospital University NHS FT and Ipswich Hospital trust together
with their respective PCTs have been considering plans to achieve the
critical mass of vascular services to meet the emerging VSGBI standards.
In December 2010 an independently commissioned review of the relative
merits of centralising major arterial and emergency vascular cases either
at Ipswich or Colchester was undertaken.  The independent review
recommended that services be centralised to the Colchester General
Hospital site.  Services will be centralised to Colchester in July 2012

     5. If a review has occurred what was the outcome?

All major arterial Vascular procedures and Emergency cases currently
carried out at both Ipswich and Colchester Trusts will be centralised to
Colchester later this year

     6. Will there be centralisation of services in your area?

Yes

     7. If there is centralisation which will be the hub hospital, how

many consultant vascular surgeons will be employed (wte), what rota

will be employed and what catchment area will be covered?

Colchester Trust will carry out major arterial elective surgery and all
Emergency work. Both Colchester and Ipswich sites will carry on with other
Vascular work.  The six vascular surgeon posts (3 from Colchester and 3
from Ipswich) will provide 1:6 cover to the service.  The population
served will be circa 700,000

Hopefully this answers your request.
