Dear Mr Singh,

Thank you for your request for information under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000.

I can confirm under Section 1(1)(a) of the Act that The Shrewsbury and
Telford Hospital NHS Trust holds the information you are requesting. In
response to your seven questions:

1.         Currently how many vascular surgeons are working at your trust,
please include wte for consultants and numbers of junior doctors?

There are currently five WTE vascular surgeons, supported by four
registrars (x2 Specialist Registrars from deanery) and three Senior House
Officers.

2.         What on call rota do the vascular surgical consultants cover
currently?

The vascular surgical consultants are on call one day in five and one
weekend in five, with prospective cover meaning that a 24/7 service is
still provided even when one or two surgeons are on leave.

3.         What catchment area do they cover?

They cover the Trust’s catchment of Shropshire, Telford &
Wrekin and mid Wales; an area of approximately 550,000 to 600,000 people.

4.         Is a review planned or has one been performed regarding
vascular surgery reconfiguration in your area, please provide dates of
review?

The West Midlands Quality review was held in 2011 and the Trust’s service
performed to high standard. All aspects of the service were interrogated
and an excellent report was obtained. This also helped to support the
successful roll-out of our own national AAA screening programme which has
just commenced this year.

5          If a review has occurred what was the outcome?

            See above answer to Q4.

6.         Will there be centralisation of services in your area?

Services are already centralised for all acute work. Elective day case
activity is performed across both main hospitals operated by the Trust, as
well as at community hospitals.

7.         If there is centralisation which will be the hub hospital, how
many consultant vascular surgeons will be employed (WTE), what rota will
be employed and what catchment area will be covered?

The hub currently is the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and no changes will
occur to this arrangement. The rota may increase to a 1 in 6 in the future
but remains 1 in 5 for now. The same catchment area will be served,
although this may increase depending on provision of services outside our
own catchment area.

Please also find attached a briefing which explains:

·         your rights to request a review by the Trust or to complain to
the Information Commissioner’s Office if you are not satisfied with the
response from the Trust,

·         an outline of the Trust’s policy on the Reuse of Public Sector
Information,

·         A feedback survey.

Please complete the feedback survey and send it back to the Trust via this
email address or via post to Freedom of Information Officer, The
Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, Royal Shrewsbury Hospital,
Mytton Oak Road, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY3 8XQ.
