Varification of data and responses by council and social service depts after the Haringey and doncaster incidences.

The request was successful.

Dear Local Government Ombudsmen,

It was found by a group of researchers ( ombudsmanwatchers www.psow.co.uk ) that you had conducted 115 complaints against social service at harringhay from 2000-2008 .

After the Baby P incidence and the Doncaster incidences, especially after the reports into these incidences

1.Did you change anything in relation to the way you investigate these type of claims. If so, what
2.what advice if any did you give to your investigators in relation to verifying responses from councils/social service depts.

Also, my local council ( north east Lincolnshire council ) and police force were the main ones mentioned in the bichard enquiry and the kelly report.

3.What changes or recommendations did you give to your investigators in relation to the outcome of these reports, especially into the concerns raised about record keeping and information supply

Yours faithfully,

George Cant

Dear Mr Cant

Request for information

In your request of 4 April, you asked whether we changed anything in the way we investigate complaints concerning possible child abuse, and what advice, if any, the Ombudsmen have given to their investigators in relation to verifying response from councils, in the light of reports on the Haringey (Baby P) and Doncaster incidents.

We did not make any specific changes in response to the various reports and inquiries you refer to. We consider that our existing practice is sound.

However, last year we did set up specialist Children and Schools Teams of investigators, and part of the rationale for this was in response to great public awareness of child protection and safeguarding, and these teams have received additional training to ensure they are up-to-date with legislative changes and best practice.

That concludes my response.
