Variable speed sign on southbound slip road junction 11 M1

The request was partially successful.

Dear Highways England Company Limited,

I entered the M1 southbound today at approximately 2:40am Friday 6th Sept 2019 and the variable speed limit sign was off and there were no other visible variable speed signs on from entering the motorway and I was flashed by the camera at approximately 65mph before junction 10.

Can you please verify the warning signs were not on as I am looking to contest any speed fine that may appear. It was only after passing the camera the national speed limit signed displayed

I know there are variable cameras there and would have been at the required limit (on a near empty motorway) should the sign have been on at the slip road.

I await your feedback

Yours faithfully,

Mr Lister.

Panton, Feleena, Highways England Company Limited

Dear Mr Lister

Thank you for your enquiry of 6 September 2019 concerning the speed limit
M1 Junction 11 Southbound 6 September 2019 at 02:40:00. The information
you have requested is information we make available to the public on a
regular basis.

Your request has been handled under normal business practices and not in
accordance with the Freedom of Information Act/Environmental Information
Regulations.

According to our records, at the site on the date and time requested the
national speed limit applied, then at 03:00:00 it was set to 50mph.

The speed enforcement system at this location has speed cameras which
covers all lanes, so the flash you experienced may not relate to your
vehicle if others were in adjacent lanes. The camera flash also sometimes
activates when the speed limit display refreshes. The system will only
enforce if it is working correctly and vehicles have been travelling in
excess of the speed limit displayed.

Since you don’t know that you have been caught speeding and don’t have and
exact place or time of conviction this information may not be accurate.

Enforcement of speed restrictions is the responsibility of the police. We
are unable to comment on, or provide you with advice about alleged
offences. Within the judicial process, information held by the police will
always take legal precedence.

This response is for information only and cannot be used in court for the
purpose of challenging an allegation of offending.

If you have any queries about this response, please contact our Customer
Contact Centre quoting reference number 19193642.

We are keen to improve the service we provide and identify where we have
done well. To help with this we would be grateful if you could take our
short feedback survey which can be found at the following address
