Utilisation of academic staff resources

The request was partially successful.

Dear University of Winchester,

I am conducting research for a report into how time is apportioned for different ranks of academic staff at various universities across England.

Please would you inform me, segmented by faculty, the average number of hours teaching per week for lecturers, senior lecturers, readers and professors. And also the average number of hours for research. These can be assigned/dedicated hours and not actual hours.

For example...

Faculty X
Lecturers: 17 hours teaching and 10 hours research p/w
Senior lecturers: 15 hours teaching and 12 hours research p/w
Readers: 9 hours teaching and 15 hours research p/w
Professors: 5 hours teaching and 22 hours research p/w

Faculty Y
Lecturers: 13 hours teaching and 16 hours research p/w
Senior lecturers: 11 hours teaching and 19 hours research p/w
Readers: 7 hours teaching and 21 hours research p/w
Professors: 5 hours teaching and 23 hours research p/w

The University of Winchester has an academic workload framework covering
all four Faculties which assigns hours for formal scheduled teaching,
teaching-related activity (assigned on a ratio of 1.1.5), research, other
professional duties and specific roles (e.g. Head of Department, Programme
Leader).  Teaching hours are not apportioned according to rank.  All
members of full-time staff are assigned 400 hours per academic  year for
research and knowledge exchange activity as part of their workload. The
maximum number of formal scheduled teaching hours per week is 14 (except
for those members of staff involved in teacher education and performing
arts where the number may be higher and but not exceeding 18). This
applies to all ranks of academic staff.

I'll enquire. My understanding is that, as per our response, there is no differentiation as per rank or faculty.

Our response was sent comfortably within the 20 working day target.

Yours sincerely

I've received the following confirmation from our Deputy Vice Chancellor.

"That is right. We do not assign specific hours to different ranks of staff and the one workload framework covers all Faculties. All ranks of full time-staff receive 400 hours of research and may teach up to a maximum of 14 hours per week (18 hours for performance-based subjects and teacher education). "
