Use of Medicines Committee rejection of request for Dichlorphenamide

Mr B Elkington made this Freedom of Information request to University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Dear University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust,

Prof Michael Hanna and his team at the Channelopathy Clinic at Queen Square have been prescribing Dichlorphenamide for patients with the condition Hypokolaemic Periodic Paralysis for 15 years although it was removed from the Formulary for no reason in March 1997.

In February 2012 this drug was withdrawn from the market but I eventually managed to persuade the manufacturer to supply me with more tablets if I could provide them with a prescription.

Initially Prof Hanna agreed to do this, but changed his mind and put the request to the Use of Medicines Committee.

Would you please let me know how the Committee arrived at their decision not to recommend Dichlorphenamide for the treatment of Hypokolaemic Periodic Paralysis and to forbid it to be prescribed as Dichlorphenamide is the only drug approved by the FDA in September 2015 for the treatment of this condition.

This puts Prof Hanna in an extremely difficult position as he has made it clear that he wants to make Dichlorphenamide available for all his patients, and was responsible together with Dr Griggs at the University of Rochester NY for the Trial in 2011/2012 that resulted in the approval by the FDA.

Yours faithfully,
Bryan Elkington
