Dear Ms Ferguson

Thank you for your request for information from Airedale NHS Foundation
Trust which was received on 6^th June 2022 .  Your request has been given
the Reference Number ANHSFT REF  5765.

We will now proceed to process the request.  The deadline date for issuing
you with a full response is 4^th July  2022.   We will try to respond to
you before this date and we will contact you if we envisage delays or if
we need more information from you.

Please note that under the Freedom of Information Act, some information
can be subject to exemptions, which means that the Trust does not have to
provide the information requested.  Some exemptions are “absolute” such as
personal information and some only apply where the “public interest” in
maintaining the exemption, outweighs that of providing the information.

In some cases, where identifying, retrieving and processing the requested
information requires more time than the “appropriate cost limit” of two
and half days work, we may refuse the request or we can charge a fee.  If
the latter is the case, I will let you know and a Fees Notice will be
issued to you.  In that case you would need to pay the fee before we
proceeded with your request,  but we will offer assistance and advise you
if, by modifying your request, we could provide you with some non-exempt
or free of charge information.

Please contact me, quoting the Reference Number above, with any questions
you might have about your request.

With kind regards

Dear Ms Ferguson

Further to your application to access information under the Freedom of
Information Act (ANHSFT REF. 5765) please find our response below.

Freedom of Information request - Use of herbicide containing
Glyphosate on hospital grounds REF 5765
Date of report - 6th June 2022
What is your policy for weed control in the hospital's grounds?
Our weed control policy is to control weeds by chemical or mechanical
methods, we have different policies for different species.
For example we have a dedicated policy for invasive species such as
Japanese Knotweed which covers a 3 year treatment course.
Do you use herbicides containing glyphosate eg Roundup, Weedol etc If
yes, what do you use What areas have been sprayed with
herbicides containing glyphosate?
Yes we do use herbicide containing Glyphosate. Currently we use Roundup
Pro-biactive 450. It is impossible to list each individual areas of the
grounds which have been treated with herbicide, however it amounts to the
majority of the site. Areas of exception include the South border
known as the woodland, the old squash courts field area to the North of
the site, the woodland area on the East of site and various smaller areas
where wild flower meadows have been planted.
What is your policy on the use of glyphosate?
We follow all recent and relevant legislation including the Health &
Safety at work act, COSHH and SOP's set out by the HSE. All operatives
are
City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Principles of Safe Handling and Application
of Pesticides (PA1) & City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award in the Safe
Application of Pesticides Using Pedestrian Hand Held Equipment
(PA6a) qualified.
What precautions were taken ahead of its use?
A risk assessment is carried out and a decision is made as to the
conditions being suitable for spraying. Warning signage is used where
necessary.
All relevant PPE is used by the operator.
For the calendar years 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022, please can
you tell me:
The volume of these herbicides you have you used The cost
In order to collate this precise information we would need to obtain
procurement records, invoices and spraying records dating back 4.5 years.
Unfortunately this is not achievable in the stated timeframe. We can
provide a yealry average.
Average amount of herbicide used each calendar year = 15 litres
Purchased in 5 litre bottles = 3 bottles
Price for 5 litres =  between £45.00 and £60.00
Total yearly average = between £135 and £180

We trust you find our response helpful.  If you feel we are not complying
