Use of Glyphosate and other such Poisons in Public Areas...

The request was successful.

Dear Devon County Council,

We need to ban the spraying of Monsanto's Roundup and other glyphosate herbicides on our streets, parks and other public areas.
This pesticide has already been banned or restricted in 8 countries.
It is a matter of great importance for those of us who care about each other's health and the health of our children, our cats, our dogs and all the flora and fauna of this county.

Yours faithfully,

gary bradley

Matthew Jones, Devon County Council

Dear Mr Bradley

Further to your email of 26th August 2016 regarding the use of Glphosphates which has been passed to me. This matter was discussed at Full Council on 28th July 2016, at which a report was presented by the Cabinet Member for Environment and Community.

I provide below an extract of the report which reflects the Council's position on this matter:

The Council takes safety very seriously and currently advocates an integrated approach to weed control which makes use of all the control options available, including both chemical and non-chemical. The Council will take the correct approach to meet any given set of particular circumstances, with an emphasis on public safety and the environment. Glyphosate is currently used by the County as targeted herbicide in our public areas, as an effective and efficient way of controlling weeds.

The process of approving and reviewing pesticides is extremely rigorous and based upon stringent criteria. Glyphosate is currently fully approved by the Chemicals Regulation Directorate (HSE), and is subject to the Plant Protection Products (Sustainable use) Regulation 2012. The review undertaken for glyphosate has shown that it is safe and effective when used professionally and in accordance with recommendations for use.

The Council will continue to actively promote the proper and responsible use of pesticides for the control of weeds and, as with all products, it is essential that they are used in accordance with current guidance and legislation, which includes their use by staff and subcontractors, and prevents or minimises the possible exposure of members of the public to pesticides.
