Updated London underground station usage figures

The request was successful.

Dear Transport for London,

I would like to make a FOI request for London underground station usage figures (entries and exits) from start of 2020 until the latest available. I have found useful information from https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/s... but I was wondering if I can request for more recent and specific data from underground stations instead of rail stations.

The request is for my master's research dissertation in investigating patterns of tube traveling due to the pandemic so it would be useful if you can provide me with the latest figures to date starting from the pandemic back in 2020 in the form of excel spreadsheet.

Yours faithfully,
Kristy Li

FOI, Transport for London

Dear Ms Li

TfL Ref 0389-2021/22

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 26
May 2021 asking for information about London underground station usage

Please think carefully about whether the request is essential at this
current time, as answering FOI requests will require the use of limited
resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other
essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response
time may be impacted by the current situation and so you may wish to
reconsider the timing of this request. Please notify us as soon as
possible if you would like to withdraw your request at the current time.

Should you wish to proceed with the request we will aim to issue a
response by 23 June 2021 in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act
2000 and our information access policy.

We publish a substantial range of information on our website on subjects

governance and our financial performance. This includes data which is
frequently asked for in FOI requests or other public queries. Please check

Dear Ms Li

TfL Ref 0389-2021/22

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 26
May 2021 asking for information about London underground station usage
figures.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of
the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy. I
can confirm we do hold the information you require.

As part of our coronavirus reporting we have used data from our ticketing
system (Oyster and Contactless Payment Card taps) to provide an overall
picture of how customers are travelling across our Tube and bus networks.
The report is available via a link on
[1]https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/publication....
However this information starts on the 13 January 2020 due to the
availability of data and analysis as part of our response to coronavirus.

Please note that in accordance with section 21 of the FOI Act, we are not
obliged to supply you with a copy of the requested information as it is
already accessible to you elsewhere.

Additional instructions:

Please select ‘Network demand reports and data’ then select ‘Tube and bus
travel demand reports using ticketing data’ and follow the arrows to the
‘Demand by Travel Mode’ page and select ‘Demand by Station Type’, select
one or more London Underground stations of your choice from the table on
the right. This will produce a graph illustrating the ‘Number of Taps Per
Day’ for the chosen location. Additionally, by hovering your mouse along
the base of the graph, a pop-up message will feature stating the date and
number of daily taps recorded for the selected station. As part of our
coronavirus reporting we plan to update this report weekly.

If you are considering submitting a further FOI request please think
carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as
answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the
attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where
requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by
the current situation.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable
to access it for any reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to
appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would
like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely

Dear FOI,

Thank you for the reply.
In the context of my dissertation project, I will have to request for the raw data in the form of an excel spreadsheet of the Oyster and Contactless Payment Card taps provided in the link for further data analysis.

Dear Ms Li

TfL Ref:0389 -2122 and 0453-2122

Thank you for your further request received by us on 6 June 2021 asking
for information about London underground station usage figures.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of
the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy.

Unfortunately, from the description provided, we are unable to identify
the information you require.

To enable us to assist with your request, please can you confirm what data
you are asking for when you request ‘raw data’ in an Excel spreadsheet for
the Oyster / contactless taps – do you mean just the data behind the
published report in the link or something else.

The Freedom of Information Act allows you to request recorded information
held by Transport for London. There are limits on the time that we are
required to spend determining whether we hold the information you are
requesting and the time spent locating, retrieving and extracting it.
Therefore you should identify the information that you want as clearly and
concisely as you can, specifying the types of document that you are
looking for. You might also consider limiting your request to a particular
period of time, geographical area or specific departments of the
organisation.

Although your request can take the form of a question, rather than a
request for specific documents, we do not have to answer your question if
it would require the creation of new information or the provision of a
judgement, explanation, advice or opinion that was not already recorded at
the time of your request.

Please note that the 20 working day deadline for responding to your
request will depend on when we receive satisfactory additional
information to help clarify your request.

If we hear nothing further from you by  2021 your response will be treated
as a new request.

In the meantime, if you have any queries or would like to discuss your
request, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Dear FOI,

I would like to clarify the ‘raw data’ of the Oyster / contactless taps I requested for is referring to the data behind the 'Network demand reports and data' published as a part of the Coronavirus publications. Since the data has been already processed and visualised in PowerBI in the publication, I will need the original data in the form of Excel spreadsheet to perform further data analysis for my project. Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Kristy Li

resources and the attention of staff who could be supporting other
essential activity. Where requests are made, please note that our response

reconsider the timing of this request. Please notify us as soon as

Dear Ms Li

TfL Ref 0453-2021/22

Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 8
June 2021 asking for information about the raw data behind our published
network demand reports on tube usage.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of
the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy. I
can confirm we do hold the information you require.

Please see attached.

The sheet called FOI Public Report Mode Demand contains the data behind
this graph below, aggregated at a mode and data level

The sheet called FOI Public Report Station Demand contains data for the
report below at an individual station, data and entry/exit level

However please note that in accordance with TfL’s obligations under Data
Protection legislation we are unable to supply the ‘raw’ data for this as
this would be data on personal individual journeys and as such we are
withholding this personal data as required by section 40(2) of the FOI
Act. This is because disclosure of this personal data would be a breach of
the legislation, specifically the first principle which requires all
processing of personal data to be fair and lawful. It would not be fair to
disclose this personal information when the individuals have no
expectation it would be disclosed and TfL has not satisfied one of the
conditions which would make the processing ‘fair’.

If you are considering submitting a further FOI request please think
carefully about whether the request is essential at this current time, as
answering FOI requests will require the use of limited resources and the
attention of staff who could be supporting other essential activity. Where
requests are made, please note that our response time may be impacted by
