Update on replace of class 171 Diesel trains with hybrid battery trains on marshlink & Uckfield lines

The request was successful.

Dear Department for Transport,

There is articles in Rail Press that most of our current class 171 diesel trains are coming off lease and been given to East Midlands Rail at end of 2021.

Could you confirm what rolling stock will be being used to replace this stock on Marshlink and Uckfield lines.

There are rumours that you have instruct Southern to be main converting existing class 377 train in to battery hybrid trains.

Can you confirm the funding in place for this conversion project and confirm when DFT expect the new battery hybrid trains to go in to services. Also can you confirm that you increasing capacity of these new trains from current 2 car to minimum of 3 car or 4 car on marshlink Line and 12 car on Uckfield line.

Also what plans are in place if these new battery hybrid trains are not ready by end of 2021.

Yours faithfully,

Paul Barker
