Benjamin Knight

Dear Crown Prosecution Service,

It has recently been suggested in a well-respected legal blog that the CPS in Bristol is using unpaid law students and recent graduates to prepare cases for court.

This has caused some concern amongst criminal justice professionals.

Please confirm whether CPS offices are allowing unpaid students and recent graduates to prepare cases for court hearings.

If it is true, for what length of time is such a person typically within the CPS i.e. are they work experience students, there for a matter of one or two weeks or are they unpaid interns (within the CPS for months at a time)?

Moreover, are these "staff" CRB-checked?

Finally, is this a situation occurring nationwide or is it simply in Bristol?

Yours faithfully,

Benjamin Knight
