Dear Aberystwyth University,

I am writing to you under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to request the following information:

1. What has been your actual expenditure on core counselling and mental health services in each academic year 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20?

2. What is your budget for counselling and mental health services services for the 2020-21 academic year?

3. What has been your expenditure on online mental wellbeing tools (eg. Silver Cloud, Big White Wall etc.) in each academic year 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20?

4. How much money has been budgeted to be spent on online mental wellbeing tools (eg. Silver Cloud, Big White Wall etc.) for the 2020/21 academic year?

5. How many staff in counselling (or allied professions), nursing or social work professions were employed whose role is to explicitly support students' overall mental wellbeing for each academic year 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20, and anticipated staffing for 2020/21?

6. How many staff were employed at the university who are non-mental health professionals, where their role is to, in part, provide support for students' overall mental wellbeing, for the same period and anticipated staffing for 2020/21?

For Questions 5 and 6, please represent this as a total number of staff and, if a staff member has multiple roles, the estimated FTE of their role dedicated to mental health. (For example, if a staff member has multiple roles and 0.2 FTE of their role is dedicated to mental health, record as 0.2.)

Llywodraethu Gwybodaeth Information Governance [infstaff], Aberystwyth University

Dear Connor O'Halloran,
I am writing in response to your request for information under the Freedom
of Information Act 2000 ('the Act').  Please find below the University's
response.

Request detail:

1. What has been your actual expenditure on core counselling and mental
health services in each academic year 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20?

We do not hold an expenditure figure specifically for core counselling and
mental health services. This area forms part of the Wellbeing Service
which, in turn, sits within Student Support and Careers Services.
Administrative and other resources are shared with the rest of the service
and are not costed separately.

2. What is your budget for counselling and mental health services services
for the 2020-21 academic year?
We do not hold a budget specifically for core counselling and mental
health services. This area forms part of the Wellbeing Service which, in
turn, sits within Student Support and Careers Services.  Administrative
and other resources are shared with the rest of the service and are not
costed separately.

3. What has been your expenditure on online mental wellbeing tools (eg.
Silver Cloud, Big White Wall etc.) in each academic year 2017/18, 2018/19
and 2019/20?

+---------------------------------------------------------+
| 2017/18 | £0 |
|----------------------------+----------------------------|
| 2018/19 | £0 |
|----------------------------+----------------------------|
| 2019/20 | £6000 |
+---------------------------------------------------------+

4. How much money has been budgeted to be spent on online mental wellbeing
tools (eg. Silver Cloud, Big White Wall etc.) for the 2020/21 academic
year?

+---------------------------------------------------------+
| 2020/21 | £5225 |
+---------------------------------------------------------+

5. How many staff in counselling (or allied professions), nursing or
social work professions were employed whose role is to explicitly support
students' overall mental wellbeing for each academic year 2017/18, 2018/19
and 2019/20, and anticipated staffing for 2020/21?

+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
|Academic year| Contracted MH specialists | O hours staff |
|-------------+-------------------------------+--------------------------|
| 2017/18 | 3.38 FTE | 0 |
|-------------+-------------------------------+--------------------------|
| 2018/19 | 3.87 FTE | 0 |
|-------------+-------------------------------+--------------------------|
| 2019/20 | 3.45 FTE | 0 |
|-------------+-------------------------------+--------------------------|
| 2020/21 | 4.45 FTE – increasing to 5.45 |3 part time staff, various|
| | FTE in 2021 | hours |
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+

Please note that staffing FTE varied during each year as staff left and
then recruitment happened, so the totals included in the above table
capture the highest point of employee FTE in each year.

6. How many staff were employed at the university who are non-mental
health professionals, where their role is to, in part, provide support for
students' overall mental wellbeing, for the same period and anticipated
staffing for 2020/21?

Under section 1(1)(a) of the Act we can confirm that the University does
not hold information about the number of staff who are non- mental health
professionals, where their role is to, in part, provide support for
students' overall mental wellbeing since this involves student facing
staff accross the university e.g. tutors, accommodation staff,
accessibility staff etc.

If you are dissatisfied with our response or the way your request has
been handled, you have the right to ask for an [1]internal
review within two months of this response.

Yours sincerely
