Dear University of Northampton,

What IT Research providers are you using for your IT Services department, Academic Staff and Students? (research access through electronic for computing students/information technology)

Do you have a subscription with Gartner?

How much do you pay annually for this subscription?

When does this subscription end?

Who makes the decision to acquire, is it Library or IT Services?

Who can I contact to speak about providing technology based research?

(more info - I would like to know if the University currently uses IT research providers such as Gartner or Forrester for their IT Services AND/OR Students, AND/OR Academic Staff. These providers would usually provide information on technology so market shares, forecasts, information on vendors.

I would also like to know what position in the university selects e-resources. so is there a director of information, or CIO, or Head of Library. who are the people involved in decision making)

Yours faithfully,

Dan Walk

9^th October 2017

Dear Mr. Walk

I write in response to your request for information dated 8^th September,
2017, received by the University and passed to me as the University’s
Freedom of Information Officer for action. Please see below the
University’s response as provided by our IT Services Department.

In response to your first question:

What IT Research providers are you using for your IT Services department,
Academic Staff and Students? (research access through electronic for
computing students/information technology)

The University uses the IT Research provider Gartner for our IT Services
Department, academic staff and students.

In response to your question two:

Do you have a subscription with Gartner?

Yes – the University does have a subscription with Gartner.

In response to your question three:

How much do you pay annually for this subscription?

The annual cost of our subscription is £25,000 to £50,000

Please note the actual cost of our subscription is considered by the
University to be exempt under Section 43(2) (the disclosure of information
which would, or would be likely to prejudice the commercial interests of a
person or body) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000. When information
is released in the form of a response to requests under the Freedom of
Information Act it is actually a release of those details to the world. By
disclosing the information you have requested the University would not
only be potentially prejudicing its own commercial interests but also
those of its supplier.

We have, however, provided you with a range figure to indicate where our
cost falls.

In response to your question four:

When does this subscription end?

The subscription ends in October 2018.

In response to your question five:

Who makes the decision to acquire, is it Library or IT Services?

Our IT Services Department makes the decision to acquire these services.

In response to your question six:

Who can I contact to speak about providing technology based research?

To discuss the provision of technology based research please contact our
Head of IT Services, Mr. Rob Palfreman by email at:
[1][email address].

I hope the University has made its response in a clear and constructive
manner; however, if you consider the University has handled your request
unfairly you are entitled to follow the process set out in our standard
advice on the University's Freedom of Information Complaints Procedure
which is available online at:
