Dear Inzamam,

Thank you for your enquiry dated 4^th November, received by us on the same
date, concerning cost of living support. Please accept our apologies for
the delay in our response. Your request is being handled under the Freedom
of Information Act 2000. Please see our response below.

Your request

1) Is your institution offering support to students to help with the rise
in cost of living?

Yes

2) If yes, what is the specific support you're providing university
students?

The University of Essex is providing support to students by:

- Increasing the financial support variable to students via the Hardship
fund.

- Reducing the cost of essential groceries for students

- Subsidising cheap hot meals

- Removing the costs of resit fees

- Paying the Voluntary Living Wage for University student jobs

The University of Essex has also increased its support for the Students’
Union for their schemes and these are:

• SU food and drink offers
• SU bulk buy stock
• SU living wage support
• SU Advice
• SU Micro Loans
• SU Warm welcomes, which is an opportunity for students to have free
food in a warm space.

More information on support available to students can be found on our
webpages at:
[1]https://www.essex.ac.uk/blog/student/pos....

3) How many university students have you supported with the cost of living
crisis in the last 6 months?

Approximately 6195 students have been supported by the University of
Essex. We are unable to provide the number of students that have been
supported by the SU as we do not hold this information.

4) Roughly, what is the expenditure to the university for providing
support to university students in the last 6 months?

Approximately £498,000.00.

We have interpreted your question to refer to cost of living support
expenditure only, however, if you are interested in the University’s
expenditure for the support it provides more generally for its students,
please let me know.

I hope you find this information useful but if you have any questions
about the data, please let me know. You would also be welcome to contact
our Comms Team on 01206 872400 and I have copied them into this email so
that they are aware of your interest. Should you feel dissatisfied with
this response or the way in which your request has been handled you can
request an Internal Review. This should be made in writing within 40
working days of the date of this email and should be addressed to the
Registrar & Secretary, Mr Bryn Morris, through [2][email address].
If you remain dissatisfied following the outcome of your complaint you
have the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for
consideration (see [3]https://ico.org.uk).
