Dear Mr Charles

We write further to your email of 8th January 2018.

Your request has been processed by us in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA).

The attached is provided in response to your request. We consider your request for security details to be exempt under Section 31(1)(a) of FOIA (information exempt from disclosure if its disclosure would, or would be likely to, prejudice the prevention or detection of crime).

Whilst the University holds this information we consider that providing this information would enable external parties, who are not privy to the confidential aspects of the University's IT systems, knowledge of the security systems the University uses to protect its systems and data. Each of these protection mechanisms have weaknesses that will be known by external individuals or organisations that wish to gain forced access to the University's IT infrastructure or attempt a cyber-attack causing its systems to fail and/or to enable access to personal/confidential data. The more of these vectors that are known the weaker the security of the University's infrastructure and its ability to prevent crime.

When considering the public interest test in applying the above exemption, the University has considered the need to show how it spends public money but if such information was disclosed it could lead to a failure of the University's IT systems and/or a disclosure of personal/confidential data held by the University which would cause serious harm to the operations of the University and/or individuals that have a relationship with the University. In these circumstances we believe that, on balance, the University should not disclose the exempted information.

If you have any questions or are dissatisfied with this response, you should contact us at [email address]. The University’s Director of Finance & Performance or his nominated alternate will review any appeal and may amend the University’s current decision. Thereafter, you may refer your request to the Information Commissioner in accordance with section 50 of the FOIA.

The Information Commissioner can be contacted at:

Information Commissioner's Office
Wycliffe House
Water Lane
Wilmslow
SK9 5AF

Telephone: 0303 123 1113 or 01625 545745

There is no charge for making an appeal.

Yours sincerely
