Universal Credit cases receiving more than £2500 per month
Dear Department for Work and Pensions,
The benefit cap was introduced some years ago to ensure that benefit recipients do not receive ridiculously large amounts of benefit which would make them better off than people who work and not entitled to benefits. However, there are exclusions to the cap which mean that actually only the poorest are affected by the cap, not those who a) receive working tax credit (even if the amount they receive is £0 !) and/or b) earn £722 per month (net income, which is about £9k gross annual income).
Could you please tell me how many benefit units are receiving:
i) more than £2500 per month in Universal Credit (equivalent to a gross annual salary of around £40k);
ii) more than £3000 per month in Universal Credit (equivalent to a gross annual salary of around £50k) ;
iii) more than £3500 per month in Universal Credit (equivalent to a gross annual salary of around £60k).
Please exclude from these numbers any benefit units receiving a disability element of Universal Credits. (I expect only claimants who are receiving the housing element and the childcare element will be included in these numbers, but there may be others too.)
Yours faithfully,
Meir Tam

What an interesting FOI request.
I suspect the answer will be quite depressing for those who choose to get up in the mornings and go to work.
