Unique Theory Test Candidates (Oct 18 onwards)

The request was successful.

Dear Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency,

Can you please supply the unique number of Theory Test candidates on a monthly basis from Oct 2018 to date for the following vehicle categories:

- Car
- Bike
- LGV (Multiple Choice Theory Test)
- PCV (Multiple Choice Theory Test)
- PDI (Multiple Choice Theory Test)

By unique we mean the total number of monthly candidates rather than the total tests for each vehicle category. So for example, if a candidate sits the Theory Test three times, they are only counted once in the data.

Yours faithfully,
Emma Bagnall

Dear Ms Bagnall

Information requested under the Freedom of Information Act (FoIA)

Further to your request of 1 November, I can confirm that we have handled
your request for information about our theory test statistics, within the
terms of the FoIA.

Your request and our response are as follows:

Can you please supply the unique number of Theory Test candidates on a
monthly basis from Oct 2018 to date for the following vehicle categories:

- Car

- Bike

- LGV (Multiple Choice Theory Test)

- PCV (Multiple Choice Theory Test)

- PDI (Multiple Choice Theory Test)

By unique we mean the total number of monthly candidates rather than the
total tests for each vehicle category.  So for example, if a candidate
sits the Theory Test three times, they are only counted once in the data.

Our response: Our Data includes distinct candidates, grouped by year and
month.

This means that if a student took an exam multiple times per month, over
several months, they only count once for that month of the year and exam
category.

Please see Annex A attached.

If you are unhappy with the way we have handled your request, you can ask
for an internal review by contacting Vasim Choudhary, Public Liaison
Manager, at [1][email address] or at the above address.

Yours sincerely

Dear [email address],

Many thanks for your prompt delivery of the requested data.

However, I do have some queries regarding the data as there does appear to be some discrepancies with the data.

The unique number of candidates in the latest supplied data appears to be around 12% higher than the initial figures that were delivered to us (IA/00619/19). For example in March 19 the latest data supplied quotes 167,054 but the data received earlier this year (IA/00619/19) quotes 147,055 (a difference of 19,999 unique candidates).

Are you able to confirm if the latest data is correct?

Yours sincerely,

Emma Bagnall

Dear Ms Bagnall

Thank you for your further email of 22 November querying our response of
20 November about theory test statistics as explained below:

The unique number of candidates in the latest supplied data appears to be
around 12% higher than the initial figures that were delivered to us
(IA/00619/19). For example in March 19 the latest data supplied quotes
167,054 but the data received earlier this year (IA/00619/19) quotes
147,055 (a difference of 19,999 unique candidates).

Our response: we have had this data re-run, and it appears that different
incorrect parameters were used for our initial reply; please find
corrected data at Annex A. Please accept our apologies.

Yours sincerely
