Dear Department for Work and Pensions,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of Department for Work and Pensions's handling of my FOI request 'Unemployment figures'.

I am a little confused as to how the department that deals with unemployment benefits does not have information on the number of people in receipt of such benefits, in particular number 2 in my initial request, I would simply like to ask for the earliest and latest figure which the department holds for unemployment benefit claims up to the stated date, which should be more than simple enough.

I believe it to be wholly unreasonable for the department to claim that it doesn't keep track of how many people are claiming benefits as it would effectively need to keep track of this information for budgeting purposes, lest there be millions of pounds simply vanishing into thin air each year for no apparent reason and the government never knowing why, it need only be an annual summary of the figure which should be very simple.

This answer would simply lead me to believe that the recent governments have been attempting to hide the claimant rates in a vain attempt at gathering support.

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/u...

Yours faithfully,

Mark Smith
