Undergraduate Medicine admissions: data on candidates applying with to A100 an Access to HE Diploma

We're waiting for Mr Singh to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear University of Edinburgh,

I would like to request the following data relating to the Medicine Course (A100) offered by your university.

I am requesting the data for candidates who received offers for one of the aforementioned law courses in the 2018/2019, 2019/2020, 2020/2021 admissions cycles (I refer to these candidates as ‘the offerholders’).

If the data for 2020/2021 is not available for whatever reason, this is understandable.

I request the following data for each admissions cycle:

1. The number of offerholders who were either planning to complete or had completed an Access to Higher Education diploma as their most recent qualification.

2. The average, highest, and lowest BMAT/UCAT scores (whichever is applicable) of the offerholders who were either planning to complete or had completed an Access to Higher Education diploma as their most recent qualification.

3. The average, highest, and lowest number of GCSEs of offerholders who were either planning to complete or had completed an Access to Higher Education diploma as their most recent qualification.

I look forward to hearing from you. Let me know if I can be of assistance in any way.

Yours faithfully,

Mr Singh

We would like to acknowledge that we have received your email. The

Information requests (freedom of information requests, environmental
information requests, data subject rights requests)

While we will make all efforts to respond to requests promptly, please be
aware that in some cases unfortunately we will not be able to respond
within statutory timescales. The [1]Scottish Information Commissioner’s
Office and the [2]Information Commissioner’s Office have both issued
statements about requests during the Covid-19 pandemic which you may find
helpful.

Please note that if you have only provided your first (or given) name in
the body of your email your request will not be valid.  To ensure your
request is valid and that the University is obliged to answer it, you must
provide your real name.  If you are making the request on behalf of
someone else you must provide their real name.  The Office of
the [3]Scottish Information Commissioner's guidance on this point explains
that if you do not provide your real name or the name of the person on
whose behalf you are making the request, you will lose your right to
appeal to the Commissioner should you be unhappy with the handling of your
request. The guidance also explains what constitutes a real name for the
purposes of making a request valid. Please refer to the guidance for
further details.

[4]The University of Edinburgh's request privacy notice, which describes
how we use the information you have supplied about yourself and your
request, is published on the University website.

MVM Undergraduate, University of Edinburgh

Dear Mr Singh

Thank you for your email.  Please accept the Enquiry Management Teams
apologies for the delay to your response. The University’s working
practices are currently affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The University of Edinburgh Medical School is renowned for preparing its
students to be world class doctors. The MBChB programme curriculum aims to
ensure that our graduates are caring, competent, confident and reflective
practitioners, and are able to function at the highest level in academic,
hospital or community settings. Further information about the MBChB

is published on the website.

DATA FOR CANDIDATES WHO RECEIVED OFFERS FOR MEDICINE IN THE 2018/2019,
2019/2020, 2020/2021 ADMISSIONS CYCLES

In terms of providing information on offer holders specific to those with
an Access to HE Diploma whether they had applied for medicine or were
holding an offer as you request; to respond to your request fully, I would
have to individually research each application record for those who
received an offer in each cycle (2018 = 496; 2019 = 537; 2020 = 497) as we
do not report on specific qualification types we cannot quickly pull
together this information. Doing this would cost more than £600, the limit
over which the University is not required to respond to freedom of
information requests.

If you were to restrict your request to a more limited time frame, the
cost would be reduced.  (this is in response to Question 1 but also would
apply to the information you are requesting in Questions 2 and 3).

Please note we accept a very limited selection of Access courses for entry
to our medicine programme here at the University of Edinburgh therefore it
is likely that the numbers for each cycle would be less than five and
therefore we would be unable to provide you with the data you require in
relation to question 2 and 3.  This is because disclosing these low
numbers could enable individuals to be identified. This would breach the
data protection principles set out in data protection legislation. The
Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 does not require us to provide
this sort of information as it is exempt under section 38(1)(b). Under
FOISA it does not matter who makes the request, if we disclose information
to one person we are expected to disclose it to all.  While you may not be
able to identify individuals from the information you have requested,
others, for example students and staff may be able to do so.

Information on the Access courses we do accept can be found on our
webpages here:
[2]https://www.ed.ac.uk/medicine-vet-medici...

We do provide more general statistical information on our webpages here
which you may find useful in terms of minimum/maximum/average UCAT scores
for the entire cohort (in relation to question 2) as again this is not
broken down into qualification types:

Right to review

If you are dissatisfied with this response, you may ask the University to
conduct a review of this decision by contacting  the University's Records
Management Section ([4]www.ed.ac.uk/records-

management/about/contact) in writing (e.g. by letter or email) or in some
other recorded form (e.g. audio or video tape).  You should describe the
original request, explain your grounds for dissatisfaction, and include an
address for correspondence.  You have 40 working days from receipt of this
letter to submit a review request.  When the review process has been
completed, if you are still dissatisfied, you may use the Scottish
Information Commissioner’s guidance on making an appeal
([5]http://www.itspublicknowledge.info/YourR...)
to make an appeal to the Commissioner.  If you do not have access to the
Internet, please let me know and I will provide a copy of the relevant web
pages.
